What might define a life fully lived? It’s a question many of us probably mean to ask ourselves. But never do. Not with any tenacity. Meet Alison: 93, registered blind, quietly spirited. A chance encounter with a city gent wearing a pin-striped suit, bowler hat and carrying a rolled umbrella might have gone unnoticed. If she’d been blind to the subtlety of life. Diwali: Barrack Obama Celebrates Hindu Festival of Light

Mr Obama became the first US president to personally take part in a White House ceremony for the festival of lights, lighting a diya (oil lamp) inside the executive mansion and bowing respectfully before a Hindu priest.

The festival will be officially marked in India and around the world on Saturday but celebrations are already underway.

A university lecturer has criticised parents for being dismissive when their seven-year-old daughter told them that she saw an angel at her bedside every night, which she felt comforted by.
