Big Questions


Starter Options – (5-10 mins)

  • Flash up Big Questions and/or Common Themes and/or Quotes

  • Introduce video-clip, distribute question(s) if required


Contribute further questions, respond to quotes.


What’s going to happen to me after I die?

Is death a bad thing?

Is death the end of me?

Should I be scared of dying?

Is it ok to end my life?





Common Themes:






Activities (10-20 mins)

  • Play video-clip eg ‘Spin’ or ‘Wit’-Emma Thompson

  • Introduce ‘Hot Topic’ eg Assisted Suicide controversy

  • Explore Student Experience of Death

In Group (or plenary):

  • explore responses to video

  • each group discusses 1 or 2 questions: one presents response


  • What are the participants’ attitudes to death?

  • How do you feel about the clip?

  • Does it relate to any experiences of your own?

Conclusion – 5/10 mins

  • Invite student responses

  • Introduce discussion on whether the law needs changing




  • Report back – how did video make you feel?

  • What moral questions does it raise?



  • Should we try to control death?

  • Fear it?

  • Welcome it in some cases? (Eg Assisted Suicide)
